The Lady Behind the Creativity

1958 born in Covington, LA., lives and works in New Orleans, LA.

Each work is an experiment. For over 19 years I have been drawing, painting and
working with images,  always focusing on figures and re-inventing space and
surface.  When I am painting or working on graphic design, it is the discovery that
comes from the act  that most excites me. In the end, each work is about its own
process. The figures grow out of abstracted landscapes telling its story as the
painting develops, establishing a relationship between abstraction and figuration
using intense colors. Paintings evolve from mixed media, found objects, manipulated
photos, computer images, photo copies, new mediums, old newspapers, maps, etc.
High color and sharp shadows create moods and compositions that best suite my
intentions.  My work is inspired by the color of everyday life, the beauty of nature
and the human form.  To  me painting is a perpetual challenge to be constantly re-
evaluated and experimented using artistic alternatives.

I have embraced the tradition and commitment to aspects of the modernist tradition
that have been re-inforced by painters such as Matisse, Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer
Bischoff, DeKooning,  and most recently Cecily Brown.

The VW series began after Katrina.  I started photographing abandoned cars in our
neighborhood and around the city.   One day while painting  I stood back, reviewed
my progress and this one particular VW appeared in the composition.  I quickly
sketched it in and it worked beautifully!  The others came quite quickly giving, life to
abandonment
.
